Our Work

The state of our health is determined by more than just access to doctors or good hospitals. A number of non-medical factors play an important role in determining how healthy we are. These social determinants of health have to do with the areas where we live, work and play, our gender, our social status, etc.

Examples of determinants of health include:
• Income and social status
• Education
• Employment and working conditions
• Social environments
• Physical environments
• Health services
• Gender
• Culture

The NCCDH provides national access points for knowledge synthesis, translation and exchange in key priority areas of public health around the determinants of health. The NCCDH is currently focusing on Early Child Development as a determinant of health and the contribution of public health home visiting to early child development. Other related priority areas include Women and Gender Equity, Employment Conditions, Health Literacy, and the use of Determinants of Health in public health practice.
